Electric towel rails
Installing an electric towel rail is one of the ways to maximise comfort in bathroom design. It is a functional solution that occupies little space, but that improves well-being and makes the room more comfortable to use.
Their main function is to eliminate moisture and heat towels and bathrobes, which makes getting out of the bath or shower more comfortable. However, due to their power and the heating requirements of the room, some towel radiator models perform two functions at the same time, as they also heat the bathroom so it reaches an optimum temperature.
We recommend that you check the technical characteristics well before choosing your heated towel rail to ensure that the heating capacity meets your needs.
As well as water-fed and mixed heated towel rails, Noken also offers electric heated towel rails. Electric heated towel rails can be easily installed, as they are fixed to the wall and then connected to an electric socket without requiring any further installation. They reach the desired temperature quickly.
How an electric heated towel rail works
Electric heated towel rails contain an anti-freeze liquid that is heated using resistance. It is important to check how much electricity is used, as well as the heating capacity of heated towel rails that use resistance, as if the resistance of the radiator is wrong, it may cause operational problems, excessive energy consumption or shorten the product's useful life.
At Noken, we test each model to ensure reasonable energy consumption and excellent heating performance in order to combine comfort with energy efficiency. All these tests are supported by a certified independent external laboratory (Tecno Cert).
We have four models of electric towel rails:
- Heated towel rails with an on/off switch. These heated towel rails are only equipped with an on and off function. They will always work at maximum power until the internal resistance reaches the maximum safety temperature and is automatically switched off. After a few minutes it will be turned on again, without the user noticing that the resistance is being turned on and off.
- Heated towel rails with thermostats to regulate the temperature of the liquid used inside the appliance. This model enables the maximum operating temperature to be controlled; however, this is done by regulating the temperature of the liquid inside the heated towel rail rather than the temperature of the bathroom. It has added benefits such as 12 or 24 hour programming, which means users can set the heated towel rail to automatically turn on at 12 or 24 hour intervals.
- Heated towel rails with thermostats to regulate room temperature. This model is equipped with a temperature sensor to measure the temperature of the bathroom. Therefore, it can maintain a stable temperature, taking the general temperature of the bathroom as a reference. This type of heated towel rail can be fully programmed using day and time settings.
- Mixed heated towel rails. The fourth model combines a water-fed heated towel rail with any of the three electric versions mentioned above. This version is usually used in homes where central heating is used for part of the year, while in other periods it is better to operate with electricity. The aim is to save energy, depending on the season.
How to choose an electric towel rail
The first decision to make when choosing a heated towel rail will be to decide what it will be expected to do. If it is needed to dry / heat towels and bathrobes, you should not worry too much about its size or heating capacity. A small or medium-sized electric towel rail will do the job perfectly. However, if you intend to use it to heat the room, you must choose one that is powerful enough. This will also depend on where you live and the time of year you are at the property.
You can use the following formula to estimate the power you will need:
Required power = Cubic metres1 x Area coefficient2
1 Cubic metres = Surface area of the bathroom x Height of the bathroom = Side x side x height
2 Area coefficient:
- Hot: 40 kcal/h or 160 BTU
- Warm: 50 kcal/h or 200 BTU
- Cold: 60 kcal/h or 240 BTU
- Very cold: 70 kcal/h or 280 BTU
Designer towel radiator
In bathrooms that have been designed to help you relax and escape the pressures of daily life, aesthetics must accompany functionality to achieve the desired level of tranquillity. Here, the heated towel rail will be designed as a decorative element and will complement the style of the bathroom. As well as selecting the design of the model, you will also be able to choose between different sizes and finishes, such as chrome and matt black or white. While white usually suits any kind of bathroom, matt black or chrome can add a contemporary feel.
Safety: where to install an electric towel rail
You should take several factors into account when choosing where to place your heated towel rail. Firstly, the overall design of the bathroom is important; however, it is also important to remember that a towel rail is a practical appliance with a specific function and that it must be installed in accordance with the regulations on electrical equipment.
To ensure maximum safety, our heated towel rails have a protection factor of IPX4 and have been tested in accordance with Directive 2014/35/EU-LVD.
We recommend that these appliances are always placed at least 60 cm away from areas that could come into contact with water, preferably in zone 3, as indicated in the regulations on electrical equipment.
You must also take care not to touch it directly, as it is a heat source that can reach up to 80°C.
